Two tips for shop owners who sell building supplies
If you sell building supplies in your shop, you may find the following tips to be quite useful.
Take steps to keep the humidity levels low in your shop
If there are building supplies stored on your premises, it is absolutely vital to keep the humidity levels in the shop as low as possible. The reason for this is as follows; lots of the most common types of construction supplies (many of which you probably stock in your shop) are made out of moisture-sensitive materials. This means that if they are exposed to high humidity levels, they will deteriorate and become unable to be sold in a very short period of time.
Construction timber, for instance, will often rot if it becomes too moist. Similarly, many nails, screws, hinges and other building supplies that are made from metal will rust when they are exposed to a lot of water.
As such, if you allow the humidity levels to get too high in your shop, your construction material stock may sustain damage and you may then experience a loss in profit, as you will have to incur the cost of restocking these damaged items.
There are several ways to prevent your shop from becoming too humid. Firstly, make sure that the building is well-ventilated. Secondly, invest in several portable de-humidifiers, and keep them running during the periods of the year when the weather is warm and the humidity levels are at their highest.
Make sure your storage units for the building supplies are in good condition
It is also crucial to ensure that the storage units in which you keep the building supplies that you sell are in good condition.
The reasons for this are as follows; a lot of building supplies are very heavy and large. If they are stored on, for example, a shelving unit which has become unstable (because, for example, several of its screws have loosened), there is a chance that it could collapse under the weight of the building supplies.
This could then lead to these items being destroyed and you then having to replace them.
Furthermore, if any customers are walking by the shelving unit when this happens, the falling building materials could land on them and potentially crush them. This type of incident could not only leave these individuals with terrible injuries, but could also destroy your reputation as a business owner and lead to the closure of your enterprise.
